INFORMATION

Create a wonderful scene inspired by the beauty of the Gnoll Country Park using watercolours.

We will be painting in Transparent Watercolours using the lake at Gnoll Country Park as a muse to create an inspiring and memorable picture.

Course requirements: Watercolours in pans or tubes, plastic palette with wells, pencil - B is ideal and a craft knife to sharpen it. A soft rubber, brushes in a brush holder as they are easily damaged, a board to lean on made of mdf or ply, masking tape to attach the paper to the board, A3 good quality watercolour paper and small pieces of scrap watercolour paper, a portable easel, 2 jam jars or white enamel cups or white thick plastic cups, a tiny sponge with small holes (a real sea sponge), a folding chair.

NB We will be meeting inside the cafe by the main entrance at 10.00 am. Monotype or monoprinting is a technique of producing unique prints using paper, glass and pencil. It was invented by Picasso and is an excellent way to produce a spontaneous drawing. Bring some images to work from or work straight from the glass.

Requirements: 

 - Wear suitable footwear for walking and suitable clothing according to weather conditions.

 - Bring a notepad or sketchbook and pencil or pen (optional).

 - Bring a bottle of water.

Look and listen to the environment with Alastair Duncan from StillWalks® with a quiet walk to and through Gnoll Country Park, Neath.

Starting from Queen Street Gallery, the walk will cross Victoria Park and approach Gnoll Park from Gnoll Drive to climb up and circumnavigate the park’s lake, taking a break at the cafe. 

When walking we are often talking with others or listening to something through headphones, cutting us off from the world around us. StillWalks® is about looking and listening, seeing and hearing . . . and benefiting from doing so. Talking will be a part of this walk at the start and at selected pause points along the way. 

The StillWalks® System “Making Natural Connections” and this FREE introductory walk will help you connect to the world around you and provide a meditative means of addressing stress and anxiety.

Join this short series of workshops as part of a production crew with artist, photographer and sound recordist, Alastair Duncan, to photograph and record an environmental walk through Gnoll Park and produce a unique StillWalks® video.

Looking and listening, seeing and hearing, exploring, investigating, discovering and sharing - this  short StillWalks® project is about developing an understanding of the connections we have with our surroundings. It shows how these connections can be positive and sustainable and how all conditions of an environment - the landscape, season, weather and wildlife are all interconnected.

You will have opportunity to learn wire working and paper folding techniques.

INFORMATION

A mixed media and stitch workshop run by Cas Holmes to coincide with her exhibition, ‘Painting with Cloth’ at Queen Street Gallery.

Using paper, textile, exploring drawing, marks and lines. Design exercises will lead to machine or hand stitched drawings onto lightweight fabrics, cottons, muslins, silk organza, synthetics and combining them with paper. Possibilities will arise to create complex layered dimensional drawings, creative exercises with reference to the ‘found object' as a reference and their application in relation to different fabrics (torn and old materials such as handkerchiefs, clothing and vintage fabrics). and found materials/paper will further help to develop personal expression and add meaning to your work. Your 'visual narrative' will take inspiration from the landscape (urban/nature) or your own references

What Students will achieve:

A series of small samples and pieces which could be used as a starting point student’ own practice for textile based work and mixed media, collage, stitching, 3-D, books or sculptural work.

Discussing ideas for working with the fabric and papers such as methods of layering and stitching together.

Developing the stitched mark as an additional decorative mark.
