INFORMATION

Queen Street Gallery invites artists to celebrate the landscape of  Victoria Gardens parkland and Neath landmark, St David’s Church in our first Plein Air competition. The event complements the beauty of the gardens and architecture of the church. Proceeds from sales will be donated to the church roof fund.
The competition is open to all artists who would like to take part in the event to capture the beauty of the park and church. Please see the accompanying rules and regulations for further details.

Friday 26th July

  • Registration at the gallery 9.30 – 10.30am (map and useful information will be given out)
  • Time allocated for painting is five hours
  • Register back between 2.30 – 3.30pm

Sunday 28th July

  • From 9.30am pictures will be hung in Queen Street Gallery exhibition space during the morning.
  • The exhibition opens to the public at 1pm with prizes being awarded at 2pm
  • Proceeds from the sale will be donated to St David’s Church roof fund.

Sunday 28th July – Sunday 25th August

A changing exhibition of pictures will be exhibited for sale in St Davids Church, and at the Community Centre Victoria Gardens. Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 4pm.

Fee

By paying the registration fee you are agreeing to abide by the Rules and Regulations. Please ensure that you have read them first.

  • Painting on Friday and Saturday ONLY

£15 for one day (five hours)

  • Painting on BOTH days

£25 for two days (2 x five hours)

We have created an amateur artist category for less experienced participants. There will be a prize for the best picture in this category. The overall prize will take into account all submitted pictures, therefore, declaring Amateur status will not exclude anyone from being the overall winner.

Full payment is needed to secure your registration for the event. Payments are non-refundable.

Should we need to cancel the event a full refund will be issued.


RULES AND REGULATIONS

  1.  Participation is open to all artists. Artists under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult during the event

2.  Full payment of a registration fee (£15 one day, £25 for two days), is required in advance to secure a place in the competition.

3.  Queen Street Gallery is the event base. Canvases or boards will be stamped at the start and at the end of each day during registration times. Artists must return to the event base to have their work re-stamped and recorded.

4.  Artists can work from any vantage point within Victoria Gardens within the allocated area shown on the map (maps to be issued one week before the event).

5.  Only two-dimensional art works will be accepted. Work must be entirely original and created on site during the allocated time on each day. Completing one work over two days is not allowed.

6.  Failure to register work back at the gallery base at the end of each day may disqualify them from the competition.

7.  Artists can create as many paintings as they are able during the allocated time, in different media. Up to two works from each day can be submitted for exhibition and sale.

8.  Canvas, paper or board size to be no bigger than 20 x 16 inches (51 x 41 cm).

9.  Any media on canvas / paper / board may be applied.

10.  Artists must submit at least one work from each day to the exhibition and sale. The exhibition and sale will run on the Sunday only. There is the opportunity to submit additional or unsold works online via the gallery’s website after the exhibition.

11.  Artists to discuss all pricing for the sale with the gallery staff.

12.  Artists must be adept at working in all weathers and must bring appropriate clothing and coverage for any conditions.

13.  Artists are personally responsible for their work always. The gallery can provide overnight storage for artworks which is at the risk of each artist.

14.  The gallery shall not be responsible for the artists safety or wellbeing during the event. Artists are responsible for arranging their own personal liability insurance for the event.

15.  Artists are responsible for arranging their own travel, food and drink, accommodation and associated expenses.

16.  Sales from the exhibition (or online afterwards) are subject to 25% commission to the gallery. Proceeds from these will be donated to St David’s Church fund.

17.  Artists are responsible for removing unsold works on the day of the exhibition or up to end of business on 31st August 2019. Unsold works may be disposed of after that date.

18.  A panel of three judges appointed by the gallery director, will award a prize od £250 to the winning submission and £100 to the winning submission in the amateur artist category. The decision will be based on entries that best sum up the ‘Beauty of Victoria Gardens’. Their decision is final, and no alternative prizes are available.

19.  All participants must accept being filmed and photographed by the gallery or media arranged by the gallery throughout the process. Images may be used for promotion on the gallery’s website, social media leaflet and other marketing materials associated with the gallery and it’s activities.

20.  All payments from the sale of artworks will be made within 30 days after the sale of work.

21.  I, the artist, understand and agree to abide by the rules above. I am entering into this competition event at my own risk. Queen Street Gallery and Neath Borough Council, will not be responsible for any injury or damage to myself, those with me, or my belongings, including my artwork at any time during this event,

SCHEDULE

PLEASE READ THIS SCHEDULE CAREFULLY

Friday 26th & Saturday 27th July

ARRIVAL 9:00 - 9:15 am

  • Registration takes place at Queen Street Gallery, across the road from Victoria Gardens and opens at 9.30am and closes at 10.30am.
  • You may register at any time during this hour, but your painting time will end exactly 5 hours from your registration (e.g. arrival at 9.45 means that you must register back by 2.45pm)
  • If you DO NOT register by 10.30am you may NOT be eligible for the competition.
  • If you arrive back after 5 hours painting time has expired your painting MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED under the rules of the competition.
  • You must provide your own canvas / board / paper (up to a maximum size of 20 x 16 inches - 51 x 41 cm). You may bring more than one painting support, but these MUST ALL BE stamped when you register at the gallery.
  • You will need to read and sign a RISK ASSESSMENT and have your photograph taken with your painting support.

PAINTING

  • The gallery is a two-minute walk from Victoria Gardens.
  • We recommend parking in Neath Multi-Storey car park, which is accessed via Prince of Wales Drive.
  • YOU MUST CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF THE GARDENS in your work but we are not limiting the painting area to specific boundaries. HOWEVER, we recommend you paint within the black marked area on your maps. 
  • Victoria Gardens is managed by Neath Borough Council, please be respectful and follow all guidance notices. PLEASE TAKE CARE AROUND ANIMALS.
  • Please do not leave litter or any painting materials or fluids in the gardens or surrounding area.
  • Gallery staff will be walking around the marked painting area during the day and can answer queries. If you need further assistance call the gallery on 01639 631081.
  • There are a number of places to eat and buy food in Neath town centre.

RETURN

  • After you finish your painting you MUST return it to the gallery. This can be at any point up to the 5 hours allotted.
  • If you do not register back at the gallery before your 5 hours allotted time has expired your painting MAY NOT BE ACCEPTED under the rules of the competition. Registration closes at 3.30pm.
  • When you register back you will need to supply a title and suggested sale price for your work.
  • Your work will be retained and stored in the gallery and catalogued for the art sale on Sunday 28th July. You may want to use a fixative, or drying agent if your work is wet, e.g. Liquin.
  • You will need to prepare your work to be hung for the exhibition. Please ensure that you add fixings on both sides with cord / string / wire between them so that the work can be hung on a peg. You may provide mounts, frames and glazing if you would like to. Space will be available in the gallery for you to prepare your painting for hanging.

EXHIBITION AND ART SALE

  • Gallery staff will hang the exhibition on the morning of Sunday 28th July.
  • Please arrive for 1pm when the exhibition and art sale opens.
  • A panel of judges appointed by the gallery will judge the work and the winners will be announced at 2pm.
  • Painting sales will be handled by Queen Street Gallery. Payments minus 25% commission will be made to artists by BACS within 14 days from the date of sale.
  • From 3pm all sold paintings can be removed by their new owners.
  • Unsold works can be removed during the afternoon, timings are negotiable.
